The YMCA Master coaches have many years of Masters coaching experience and are dedicated to the success of every level of swimmer.



Masters Coach Leslie Scott

Career: Special Education Teacher

Noteworthy in Swimming:

  • -All American Open Water Swimmer
  • -Swam 221 miles in one month and placed first in a workout race
  • -Swam a 10-mile ocean race from Seal Beach to Long Beach

Coaching Experience: Coached for many different teams in four states. Coached summer league, USS age group swimming, high school, Special Olympics, a deaf swim team, and Masters. Aquatic Director for a master planned community. Currently the coach for Hillcrest High School

Masters Coach Carolyn Harrell

Carolyn Harrell

Hometown: Charleston, South Carolina

College: College of Charleston

Career: Sales

Noteworthy in Swimming:

  • -4x All-American Swimmer at the College of Charleston
  • -College of Charleston Athlete of the Year 1982
  • -College Swimmer of the Year 1982 & 1983
  • -Swam one summer with the 1980 Olympic Swim team

Coaching Experience: Been coaching and teaching swim clinics since 1980

Masters Coach Thomas Callaway

Thomas Callaway

Hometown: Boston, Massachusetts

College: Wofford College

Career: Senior Executive Level, Financial Management with the Worlds largest firms

Noteworthy in Swimming:

  • -Mass. state champion in every event except backstroke
  • -Coached more than 60 state champions in SC and NC, and one Masters National champion
  • -Coached all the teams that have beaten Gower
  • -Y-age group record holder

Coaching Experience: Have coached since 1963. Coached summer leagues, year round teams, and masters teams. Created the concept of off season technical stroke clinics for summer swimmers here in Greenville, The Stroke Clinic

Masters Coach Jim Keogh

Jim Keogh

Hometown: Norwalk, CT

College: Colgate University, undergraduate; Clemson University, M Ed.

Career: 27-years as a coach on the high school, club and university level, primarily as a Senior Coach, but coached all age groups at sometime in career.

Noteworthy in Swimming:

  • -7th US Long Distance National Champion- Open Water 4-mile (1969)
  • -Mutli-state and regional champion and record holder, Connecticut and Region I
  • -Freshman record holder in the 500 Freestyle (Colgate University)
  • -2nd Place: 400IM Puerto Rico National Championship (1976)

Coaching Experience: Have produced at least one Senior National qualifier in every job held as a club coach. Trained six first-time Olympic trial qualifiers. Interned with Paul Bergen and Eddie Reese (Longhorn Swim Camp, 1978). 2-Time Coach of the Year (USA Swimming in South Carolina, 2000 & 2001).
